American and Barbecue ($15-$25 per entrée)

I love Frontera Grill! Owner/Chef Rick Bayless is a total rock star...James Beard Winner, prepared a state dinner at the White House, cookbook author, etc., etc. The menu is somewhat seasonal, but some items seem to remain. My favorites include the appetizer platter that features a variety of specialties, duck quesadillas and the Mezcal Margarita (it's shaken, not stirred). Other than large groups (they do have a private room that seats about 15), they don't take reservations. Check the website for dinner hours -- people line up at least an hour prior to opening. I usually just sit in the bar (very festive atmosphere), order from the menu and kick-back with a margarita. Fabulous

International Cuisine ($15-$25 per entree)

My dish is at the Grand Lux, it's the 3 salmon special. It prepares salmon in three different ways, one is glazed with a sweet sauce, one is grilled, and I forget the way the other one is prepared because by the time I get to it my stomach is thanking me too loudly for ordering this dish. It is pretty affordable, always available, and never a disappointment. Enjoy.

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery
One W. Grand

American & Pub Food ($10-$15 per entrée)

Rock Bottom is a great place to enjoy alfresco rooftop dining in Chicago. Their menu will satisfy your cravings for comfort food and is good for a late night snack. Their microbrews are incredible - my personal favorite is the “Erik the Red Ale” but if you can’t decide I recommend the beer sampler. The brewery also offers multiple seating venues - the bar area with pool tables and big screen tvs, the quiet sit down restaurant, and of course the best option for August - the rooftop.

My favorite restaurant out of all of these choices would have to be Shaw's. They have the most amazing food to satisfy any foodie. The menu items are wonderfully prepared with blends of spices and sauces that make for a really unique flavor. The chef pairs the entrees with wonderful sides and everything is cooked perfectly. They could honestly make a seafood lover out of anyone. I love that place.

Volare
201 E. Grand Ave.
(312) 410-9900
www.volarerestaurant.com
Italian ($15-$25)

Best entree...Gnocchi with Salmonata Sauce.  The gnocchi melts in your mouth and the sauce is delicious!  Volare is a cute little restaurant where they pack you in, but it's worth it!  Not a good place to go with a large group, but nice for a small group of friends or a date.  Plus they have alfresco dining which is what summer in Chicago is all about!
