The Behavioral Interviewing Workshop provided participants the opportunity to learn and practice the concepts behind behavioral interviewing.
In hiring a person to fill a position, it is important to determine if he or she has enough competencies to be a good fit for the position they are applying for. Behavioral interviewing is one of the best techniques for assessing those competencies – and is estimated to be six times more effective in choosing the right person than traditional interviewing techniques.
There are many job candidates who are “good” at interviewing, but not “good” on the job. It is easy for someone to say they are good at something – but it is more important that they demonstrate that they are good.
The best predictor of future performance is past performance.
Behavioral interview questions do not ask “are you good at this competency?”Instead, they require candidates to “prove” they have a competency by asking them to give specific examples of when or how they have demonstrated the competency in the past.
Good behavioral interview questions are designed to get evidence of how a person has previously performed by asking candidates to provide complete details of prior performance. It is important that the candidate provides:
- The specific situation facing the candidate
- The actions the candidate took
- The results caused by these actions
Some examples of behavioral interviewing questions include:
“Describe the most challenging negotiation in which you were involved. What did you do? What were the results for you? What were the results for the other party?”
“Give me an example of when you were responsible for an error or mistake. What was the outcome? What, if anything, would you do differently?”
“Describe a project or idea that was implemented primarily because of your efforts. What was your role? What was the outcome?”
