IREM Visits China Shanghai Chapter
(November 2012) IREM President Beth Machen, CPM, will travel to China next month for a chapter leadership visit with China Shanghai Chapter No. 118 and its sponsoring organization, Shanghai Weston Real Estate Management Institute, a division of the Brawman International Group.

While in Shanghai, Machen will inaugurate 22 new CPM Members during a special pinning ceremony. This surge of new members represents a 50% growth of the chapter in 2012. This is the first class of new CPM Members since the formation of the China Shanghai chapter in April 2011.

CPM Courses Wrap in Russia and Japan
(November 2012) CPM courses in St. Petersburg, Russia were brought to a close when IREM Faculty Tom McAndrews, CPM, lead the capstone offering there. The courses were sponsored by IREM’s newest partner in the country, the Russian Guild of Managers and Directors. Approximately 13 students have been following the courses since they began in April of this year. IREM also partners with the Russian Guild of Realtors, based in Moscow, to sponsor courses in that city. Russia Chapter No. 109 is also based in Moscow.

CPM courses are also ending for 2012 in Tokyo and Fukuoka, Japan, where they’ve been running since June. Between the two cities, 38 students have been following the program.

Approximately 40% of all CPM classroom courses in 2012 were offered internationally. Courses took place in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Poland, and Russia.

IREM Promotes Membership in Europe
(October 2012) Earlier this month, IREM representatives traveled to Budapest, Hungary, and Munich, Germany, to attend various conferences and promote the property management profession, IREM designations, and membership.

In Budapest, IREM President Jim Evans presented to the Hungarian Association of Real Estate Management (HAREM) on real estate trends. While the economic crisis has been especially rough on the economies of Eastern Europe, HAREM continues to actively participate in professional forums on property management worldwide and hopes to partner again with IREM in the near future to offer education.

Then in Munich, IREM representatives networked at ExpoReal. ExpoReal is an international trade fair for commercial property and investment and is one of the largest events of its kind in Europe.

Members from Six Countries Represented at IREM Fall Leadership Conference

(October 2012) IREM members traveled from far and wide to participate in the IREM Fall Leadership Conference. This year, attendees came from Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Japan, South Africa, and South Korea. International attendees took advantage of IREM’s valuable education sessions and chapter leadership events and also participated in special activities including a presidential reception and a tour of the Louisiana State Supreme Court building.

Congratulations to Colleen Cummings, CPM Candidate, who won the raffle in the international lounge! To enter, participants had to answer the question, “What percentage of CPM designees lives outside the U.S.? 2%, 12%, 22% or 32%?” The correct answer was “12%.” Ms. Cummings won a gift assortment of alcohols and liquors from around the world.

International Conference in Brazil Draws from Around the Globe
(September 2012) When SECOVI-RIO, which represents the interests of real estate management companies in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, celebrated its 70th anniversary, IREM was there, represented by IREM President Jim Evans, CPM, and CEO Russ Salzman.

The anniversary was observed with the Third International Forum of Real Estate Professionals, which included representatives of real estate management associations from Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Among the speakers were several CPM and ARM Members, including Evans, Noriaki (George) Shiomi of Japan, and Jose Pepe Gutierrez of Spain, plus Leonardo Schneider, Ronaldo Coelho Netto, and Maria Teresa Mendonca Dias of Brazil. The forum closed with the signing of a declaration of shared principles of the international institutions that were represented.

Japanese Condominium Management Companies Association Visits Chicago
(October 2012) Fifty delegates from the Japanese Condominium Management Companies Association visited Chicago early this month for a professional learning tour. In addition to visiting IREM Headquarters, the group toured three condominium properties in Chicago managed by Wolin-Levin, Inc, AMO. Dan Chalifoux, CPM, director of portfolio management at Wolin-Levin, presented to the group about condominium management practices in the U.S.

This is the second time IREM has hosted delegates from this Association in Chicago. The first time was in October 2010.

Upcoming ProEstate Conference Features Master Class by IREM President Evans
(September 2012) IREM President Jim Evans, CPM traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia to participate in ProEstate, a real estate forum organized by the Russian Guild of Managers and Developers (GMD). As part of his participation at ProEstate, Mr. Evans presented a master class on condominium management.

 IREM and GMD are longtime affiliates. In early 2011, IREM signed a licensing agreement with GMD. The first group of students will complete the cycle of CPM courses in November 2012.

IREM Financial Courses Undergo a Canadian Update
(August 2012) Last year, the Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC) voted to replace their financial courses with IREM’s FIN402, ASM603, ASM604, and ASM605 courses. This change eliminates the equivalency program that had previously been in place in Canada. Now students working towards IREM designations will use the IREM courses to fulfill the financial requirements.

REIC began the task of creating Canadian versions of the finance courses in 2012. Working off the 2012 course versions from IREM course developers, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in Canada created a new version of FIN402, which was piloted in May 2012. Now, the SME group is tackling ASM603, ASM604 and ASM605, the investment real estate and valuation course series. This five-day unit of courses is currently being finalized for the Canadian market and will be piloted before the end of 2012.

International Chapter Videos Scheduled to Premier in New Orleans!
(August 2012) The 2012 International Services Advisory Board has charged international chapters will a video project to premier at the 2012 fall conference. Chapters were asked to submit a short video featuring a unique property in their area.

Make sure to check out the submission from Chen Ying, CPM of China Shanghai Chapter No. 118. This video features the Xujia Hui Center in Shanghai, an urban complex that, when completed, will include a 5-star hotel, luxury condos, office buildings and retail.

Submissions from Brazil Chapter No. 111, Japan Chapter No. 110, and British Columbia Chapter No. 50 will also be featured.

IREM Welcomes International Delegations to Chicago
(July 2012) IREM organized programs for two international groups traveling to Chicago to learn more about the local real estate market.

The first group, Novos Empresarios, or New Entrepreneurs, traveled from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The New Entrepreneurs is the young professional sector of IREM’s education licensee in Sao Paulo, SECOVI-SP. During their visit to Chicago, the group of 18, made-up of architects, real estate lawyers, realtors and managers, participated in a property tour of the Trump International Hotel and Tower and the Aqua Building. They also listened to presentations at IREM Headquarters by IREM and NAR staff.

The second group traveled to Chicago from St. Petersburg, Russia. Members of IREM’s licensee, The Guild of Managers and Developers, had the opportunity to meet with the managers of Draper and Kramer, and toured some of their properties - Lincoln Park 2550, the Palmolive Building and the Residences at 900 N Michigan Ave.

IREM concludes the first round of CPM courses through new sponsor, CBRE-Korea
(July 2012) This month marks the conclusion of IREM’s first cycle of CPM courses in Seoul with its new sponsor, CBRE-Korea. Twenty-two practitioners went through the courses, taught by a mix of US and Korean faculty. IREM is looking forward to approving a new batch of CPMs in Korea, and for the second cycle of courses, set to kick-off in October 2012.

IREM Japan chapter wins Exceptional International Chapter Award
(June 2012) IREM bestowed Japan Chapter No. 110 the Exceptional International Chapter Award, presented last month by IREM President Jim Evans during the Japan Chapter Annual Meeting in Yokohama, Japan.
The Japan chapter merited this award due to its exceptional activity in 2011, including 28 course offerings at two sites with 495 enrollments, a new membership growth of 30 CPM Members, and a 95% membership retention rate.
Several other international IREM chapters won the International Star Chapter Award: Poland Chapter No. 108, Russia Chapter No. 109, Brazil Chapter No. 111, and China Shanghai Chapter No. 118. Congratulations to all winners for their achievement in 2011!

IREM Manitoba chapter wins Outstanding Canadian Chapter Award
(June 2012) Manitoba Chapter No. 114 was presented the Outstanding Canadian Chapter Award last month during the IREM Region 14 Leadership Conference in Calgary, Alberta. This is the second time in a row the Manitoba chapter has won this award. The award is presented to the Canadian chapter with the highest point value based on chapter size in the Chapter Star Workbook.
Other Canadian chapters were named 2011 Star Chapters during the conference, including five star chapters British Columbia No. 50, Edmonton No. 54, Manitoba No. 114, and Saskatchewan No. 117. Ottawa Chapter No. 115 received three stars and Calgary Chapter No. 116 received two stars. Congratulations to all Canadian chapters who received star chapter awards!

IREM Fall Leadership Conference to Feature International Lounge
As part of the its initiative to increase visibility of IREM’s international chapters and programs, the IREM International Services Advisory Board announces the creation of an international lounge area at the Fall Leadership Conference in New Orleans. All conference attendees are invited to visit the lounge and meet members from around the world, who will be showcasing information about their local IREM chapters.

IREM promotes its conferences on the IREM website language pages in Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

IREM Represented at 2012 FIABCI World Congress and RGR Annual Congress in St. Petersburg, Russia
(May 2012) St. Petersburg, Russia, was the setting in early May for the FIABCI World Congress and the Russian Guild of Realtors (RGR) Annual Congress. At both, IREM was represented by IREM Past President Ron Goss, CPM, and Leah Misbin, IREM manager of international operations. Mr. Goss delivered three presentations – on risk management, green buildings and sustainable operations, and social media. IREM took part in the FIABCI Congress in its role as a principal member of FIABCI.

IREM’s Russia Chapter No. 109 met in conjunction with the RGR Congress, at which time Mr. Goss presented the International Star Chapter award to the chapter leaders and installed 26 new CPM Members.

IREM Leadership Attends Japan Chapter No. 110 Annual Meeting
(May 2012) IREM’s international strategy was the theme of a presentation delivered by IREM President Jim Evans, CPM, when he and IREM CEO Russ Salzman were in Yokohama, Japan, for the Japan Chapter No. 110 annual meeting. Other highlights were the installation of 32 new CPM Members, presentation of the International Star Chapter Award to the Japan Chapter, and acknowledgement of outgoing chapter president Kuniko May Osaki, CPM, for her service to the chapter.

IREM Leadership Visits Seoul, South Korea
(March 2012) IREM President Jim Evans, CPM, and VP of Global Services Nancye Kirk traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to take part in the annual meeting of IREM Korea Chapter No. 112; meet with IREM’s newest course licensee, CBRE-Korea, and observe a course offering; and conduct a seminar sponsored by the Korean Real Estate Management Academy (KREMA). The full set of CPM courses will run throughout the spring and summer of 2012.

IREM Attends MIPIM Conference in France
(March 2012) IREM President Jim Evans, CPM, and IREM CEO Russell Salzman traveled to Cannes, France, to attend the MIPIM Conference. While there, they met with representatives of the Russian Guild of Managers and Developers (GMD), which will begin offering IREM courses in April under its licensing agreement. MIPIM is a community of real estate professionals; their annual conference brings together practitioners from all aspects of the global property sector.

REIC to Offer IREM Financial Courses
(March 2012) IREM’s longtime partner, the Real Estate Institute of Canada, will begin offering IREM financial courses exclusively beginning this year. Previously, IREM members in Canada completed the IREM credential financial course requirement by taking REIC financial courses. With this change, students following IREM’s programs as well as the other non-IREM REIC designation students will take IREM courses for credit. These courses are in the process of being “Canadianized.”

There are currently about 1,750 total REIC Members in Canada, 850 of whom are IREM Members.

IREM Signs Agreement with CB Richard Ellis Korea
(February 2012) In late 2011, IREM entered into a new licensing agreement with CBRE Korea. CBRE-Korea, based in Seoul, plans to begin offering CPM courses in the first quarter of 2012.

IREM has been offering courses in South Korea since 2002. Most recently, IREM education was offered through its chapter, Korea Chapter No. 112. By adding this new licensee in Korea, IREM believes that the IREM brand and the CPM will expand into new Korean markets and produce growth in the region.
