J. Benjamin (Ben) McGrew, CPM, CCIM, is a senior vice president of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). McGrew also is president and majority shareholder of MANAGEWEST, Inc., a professional, full-service management company based in Sacramento, CA.
McGrew has been involved in property management in Northern California since 1980 and has held a California real estate license since 1982. He has managed/controlled various types of commercial investment real estate including, but not limited to, land entitlement, single family, multi-family, office, industrial, retail, mini-storage, marinas, and homeowners associations.
In addition to property management expertise, he has provided asset management services to major organizations such as FNMA, FDIC, GE Capital, US Life, AMRESCO Management, Inc., Bank of America, and many others. He also has formed partnerships to develop land and acquire improved investments.
Since 1982, McGrew has served as a Receiver for the Superior Court of the State of California on more than 700 occasions, primarily in California but also in 12 other states. He has completed comprehensive courses on receiverships administration and procedures at Loyola Law School in 2000, 2004, 2009, and 2011, as well as facilitating a faculty forum at the school in 2004 and 2011. He also has served as a Federal Receiver in California and New Mexico.
McGrew has been a Federal Bankruptcy Trustee in the Northern District of California since 1982. He is currently seated in the Northern District as a Panel Trustee. He also has served in many other Districts of the Federal Bankruptcy Court system nationwide.
McGrew earned his Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) in 1987, and has long been active in IREM’s Sacramento Valley Chapter No. 22. He served as chapter president in 2001, was named “CPM of the Year” in 2000 and again in 2004, and received its prestigious “Chapter Leadership Award” in 2007.
He also has served on several IREM committees at the national level. A past chairman of IREM’s Ethics and Discipline Committee and its Legislative and Public Policy Committee, he currently is a member of the Ethics and Discipline Committee and the Ethics Appeal Board, and was elected to IREM’s Governing Council to serve a term from 2008 to 2010. As well, he served as the 2009-2010 Regional Vice President of IREM for Region 11, which encompasses California and Hawaii and is the largest regional base of membership for IREM worldwide. He also has served on the IREM Executive Committee.
Along with his membership in IREM, McGrew is a member of the Sacramento Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, and the California Receivers’ Forum-Sacramento Chapter. In addition to holding IREM’s CPM designation, he earned his CCIM designation from the CCIM Institute and is a rated aircraft and helicopter pilot.
