(Chicago, July 18, 2013) –Critical thinking is one of the top five skills essential to real estate management success, according to the findings of a survey of 800-plus top real estate management professionals conducted by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). A new IREM white paper, titled simply “Leadership Development: Critical Thinking,” provides ideas and suggestions for real estate managers and practitioners in other fields to make well-informed, reasoned decisions and  enumerates common mistakes people make that undermine such decisions.

The publication is the fourth in a series of IREM white papers that examines various leadership-related topics. It will help readers work through the process necessary to achieve better, more-productive results in their problem solving and decision making, a process that includes:

  • Clearly and precisely identifying the real, underlying issues and problems to be addressed
  • Gathering all necessary, relevant, accurate information
  • Evaluating the information correctly while being open-minded and thorough in assessing it
  • Identifying the best solutions to problems and making well-reasoned decisions that take into account the implications and practical results that flow from them
  • Working collaboratively with others to find solutions to complex problems.
