(Chicago, April 18, 2013) –The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and the CCIM Institute have jointly honored U.S. Congressman Stephen Cohen (D-TN) with their 2013 “Legislator of the Year” award. For the past several years, IREM and CCIM have annually recognized the efforts of a legislator who has shown significant support for, and understanding of, the issues important to commercial real estate.

Cohen was cited for his support of increased liquidity for the industry by advocating raising the business lending cap for well-capitalized credit unions. This could create significant economic growth and development. He also supports the Sales Tax Fairness Act, which would create a fair and level playing field for all retailers ‐ online or brick and mortar. As well, he has championed the Section 8 Reform Act, which provides more flexibility for American families and streamlines regulations for property owners. Observed IREM 2013 President Beth Machen, CPM, part of a group of IREM and CCIM members who presented Cohen with his award in his Capitol Hill office: As commercial real estate begins to recover, we need leaders like Rep. Cohen who understand the impacts of policies on private businesses and the importance of the real estate market to our overall economy.”
