(Chicago, June 11, 2010) The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and the CCIM Institute have jointly honored Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL) with their 2010 “Legislator of the Year” award. Biggert was recognized by the groups for her strong support of the real estate industry through a variety of legislative and related activities.
More specifically, she was cited for helping to articulate – and seeking remedies to address – the commercial real estate industry’s concerns about tax treatment issues including capital gains, carried interest and leasehold improvement. Similarly, she has championed initiatives to deal with commercial mortgage market liquidity issues of industry concern, including credit union lending, term extensions, accelerated depreciation, and mortgage insurance.
A real estate attorney prior to being elected to Congress, Biggert currently is a member of the House Financial Services Committee, and serves as the ranking member on the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
Biggert was presented with her award during IREM’s and CCIM’s recent “Capitol Hill Visit Day,” an annual event during which members of both organizations meet with Senators and Congressmen and their staffs to promote understanding and support for commercial real estate’s legislative advocacies. More than 230 separate meetings were held during this year’s event.
