(Chicago, Nov. 8, 2011) The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public foundation, recently honored IREM Faculty Member Emeritus John W. Magnuson, CPM, of Lakewood, WA, with its Lloyd D. Hanford Sr. Distinguished Faculty Award. The Hanford award is presented periodically to a member of the IREM faculty who has shown extraordinary dedication to the educational process and the advancement of knowledge in the real estate management profession. It commemorates the direct contributions of Lloyd D. Hanford, Sr., one of the Institute’s early presidents and a founder of the IREM real estate management education program.

In presenting the award to Magnuson, president of Magnuson Management Company, a real estate and asset management firm headquartered in Lakewood, IREM Foundation President Robert Toothaker, CPM, cited his legendary contributions to IREM and the real estate management industry overall. He noted that Magnuson has held several positions of leadership within IREM over the years, from chapter president to IREM national president. Said Toothaker, “John has taught IREM courses throughout the world for over 20 years, is a frequent contributor to IREM publications and those of others. He has been a member of the National Advisory Board for more than 25 years. Through his continued dedication and passion for the industry, John constantly looks for ways to develop new techniques and strategies to make it better.”

Magnuson has more than 40 years of experience with investment property ownership and management and has taught real estate courses for numerous national and international organizations, in addition to IREM. In 2006, he was awarded the Louise L. and Y.T. Lum Award by the IREM Foundation, honoring a lifetime of achievements in the field of investment real estate management. A founding trustee of the Washington Center for Real Estate Research, he also served for 10 years as a member of, and real estate advisor to, the Washington State Investment Board and their $85 billion retirement funds. Other clients include REITs, publicly traded real estate operating companies, and accounting and law firms.
