Welcome to the IREM Capitol Hill Visits Page!
We are already gearing up for another successful year on Capitol Hill. Below, please see an update from the 2013 Capitol Hill Visits Day that took place on Wednesday, April 10th in Washington, D.C. Also, you will find information on the 2014 Capitol Hill event.
2013 Capitol Hill Visits Day Issues Update:
Marketplace Fairness Act:
The Marketplace Fairness Act (Senate Bill 743) was passed by the U.S. Senate earlier this week. It was approved by a 70-24 vote. You took the Marketplace Fairness Act (Internet Sales Tax Fairness) to the Hill and asked your legislators to support legislation that would modernize our nation’s tax policy and provide equity between online and brick-and-mortar retailers by allowing states to collect sales tax on remote sales. The measure still needs to be taken up in the House of Representatives, but the bill’s passage by the U.S. Senate is a huge victory and step in the right direction. Congratulations!
Lead Paint in Commercial Buildings:
Another issue you brought to your Congressional Members is lead paint in commercial buildings. You urged your U.S. Representatives to add their names to a sign on letter to the EPA asking them to not hastily create regulations related to the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking titled, “Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting (LRRP) Program for Public and Commercial Buildings.” Your lobbying efforts resulted in 51 U.S. Representatives adding their name to the EPA letter that was sent on May 1. We hope the EPA will understand the importance in slowing down the rulemaking process to fully understand if and how lead paint impacts the renovation, repair, and painting of so many diverse types of commercial properties.
Thank you again for your dedication to IREM and CCIM Institute’s legislative priorities! Your passion and hard work is certainly paying off this year.
