Do you have a phone interview in the future? Consider these six tips for making a lasting impression. Pass the phone interview and your next call will be to schedule an in-person interview.

  1. Do your research
    • Google the person you will be talking to
    • Look at the job posting you applied for
    • Study the company’s culture by going to their website

  2. No dropped calls
In today’s world, land lines are hard to come by when doing a phone interview. If you plan on using your cell phone, make sure you have a good signal and are somewhere with no distractions.

  3. Dress for success
Although it’s a phone interview, dress up and smile. As silly as it may seem, it will make you feel more confident and the interviewer will see it through the phone

  4. Make sure to pause
The interviewer needs to take notes on you so don’t sprint through your answers. If you go too fast, some of your answers may be lost.

  5. Ask questions
At the end of every phone interview, the interviewer will ask if you have any questions. Be prepared with a few meaningful questions that tie in with your interview. Since the phone interview is the initial step to an in-person interview, stay away from asking questions about salary and benefits.

IREM develops relationships with colleges and universities in an effort to make real estate management a career of choice among students and others entering the workplace.  Here’s some recent news from several of these institutions:

Georgetown Real Estate Students Win NAIOP Maryland/DC Intercollegiate Case Competition

For six weeks this spring, a team of Master’s in Real Estate students balanced work, life, and school work as well as putting in an extra 8-12 hours a week working on their team’s submission to the NAIOP Maryland/DC Intercollegiate Real Estate Case Competition. That hard work paid off on April 12 when the team was announced the winner of the competition.  As the winning team, the students won $10,000.

Bloch School Real Estate Student Helps Sweep International Urban Design Competition

A team of students from the UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management’s Master of Entrepreneurial Real Estate Program and Kansas State University’s architectural school won first place in the ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition.  The team received a $50,000 prize.
