IREM marks the passing of Eugene Burger, CPM®, and real estate management legend

IREM® has been blessed with many remarkable leaders throughout its history – individuals who’ve been thought leaders in the industry, have been role models who inspire others, and those who’ve elevated the real estate management profession through their business and personal lives. At the top of this pantheon was IREM’s 1981 President, Eugene J. (Gene) Burger, CPM®, CRE, who recently was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Listening, learning: A journey

I thought I knew. Love, respect, kindness, understanding. Justice. But I learned a lot this last year. Indeed, it completely floored me how much we all have to learn, how much there was to explore, how much wasn’t talked about, how much we need to listen. Powerful, important stories. It became clear that this cultural journey, this Moment, was about long-tolerated and accepted norms, how changes to American culture won’t happen without significant work.

COVID-19 challenges are shared with multifamily managers industry-wide

COVID-19 challenged everyone who manages real estate. But how did the 2020 experiences of IREM members measure up against those of members of the National Apartment Association (NAA)? You can find out by looking into NAA’s recent poll of C-suite executives and onsite building staff. The survey, conducted by J Turner Research, went to 1,651 participants. Here’s a sampling of the findings.

Honoring the past for inspiration in the present

Americans have officially recognized February as Black History Month since 1976, when President Gerald Ford called upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” But really, the intention to ensure the richness and vitality of Black American culture is honored and preserved goes back much further, to a man named Carter G. Woodson.
