Applications for the 2023 Governing Council will open in Spring 2022.

The Governing Council is IREM’s ultimate decision-making body. Governing Councillors have a strong understanding of local, national, and international issues that need to be brought to the forefront of the IREM agenda. They are knowledgeable about the real estate management industry. And they are knowledgeable about how IREM works – strategically, operationally, and legislatively.

Over 200 members serve on the Governing Council:

  • Elected Governing Councillors – must be a CPM®, ARM®, ACoM, or CPM candidate
    • 75 At-large Governing Councillors (serve 3-year terms)
  • Ex-Officio Governing Councillors (serve on Governing Council for the term of their position)
    • President (Chair of Governing Council)
    • President-elect
    • Secretary/Treasurer
    • Regional Vice Presidents
    • IREM Country Vice Presidents
    • Remaining members of the IREM Board of Directors
    • Past IREM presidents
    • All sitting chapter presidents

Things to know about the Governing Council

  • Sitting Chapter President and Regional Vice Presidents serve on the Governing Council as ex-officio members for the duration of their term.
  • Each of the 13 U.S. regions is allocated a specific number of At-large Governing Councillors based on the total number of CPMs.
  • International members may also apply and serve.
  • Per IREM Bylaws, no elected Governing Councillor after having served two full consecutive terms, shall be eligible for re-election until one year’s time has elapsed.
  • Governing Councillors are expected to:
    • Attend the annual Governing Council meeting for the duration of your term and actively participate.
    • Be knowledgeable about IREM’s strategic plan, bylaws, policies, and key programs.
    • Review Governing Council reports, financial reports, agendas, and other materials distributed throughout the year.
    • Represent the voice of your chapter and region.

  • How will I make a difference by serving on Governing Council?

    You can make a difference by:

    Make decisions that affect IREM’s future:

    • Adopting the strategic plan
    • Approving the annual operating plan and budget
    • Determining legislative advocacy issues and setting IREM policy
    • Approving member programs, services, and products, and chapter formation, dissolution, and policies
    • Approving Bylaw amendments and Statement of Policy modifications

    Making decisions that affect the real estate profession:.

    • Use your leadership skills to represent the voice of IREM membership by bringing emerging industry trends, issues, and challenges to the forefront of IREM’s focus and planning.
    • As an IREM Member, you are in a unique position to be a decision-maker on the highest level, helping IREM increase recognition and build the presence of the real estate management industry.
  • What would be my commitment as a Governing Councillor?
    • Attend the annual Governing Council meeting for the duration of your term and actively participate.
    • Be knowledgeable about IREM’s strategic plan, bylaws, policies, and key programs.
    • Review Governing Council reports, financial reports, agendas, and other materials distributed throughout the year.
    • Represent the voice of your chapter and region.
  • What are the terms for Governing Councillors?

    At-large Councillors serve a 3-year, staggered term.

    Terms begin January 1 and end December 31.

    Note: Effective in 2022, there are no longer 13 ARM Representative Councillor positions (1 per region). All elected Councillors are At-large Governing Councillors.

  • If the ARM Representative Councillor position is removed beginning in 2022 and I currently serve in that position with a term continuing through 2022, does my term end early?

    All current ARM Rep Councillors with terms continuing through 2022 and beyond will be considered At-large Councillors and continue to serve for the duration of your elected term.

  • What expenses are covered for Governing Councillors?

    All expenses related to attending the IREM Global Summit are the responsibility of the volunteer.

  • How and when are Governing Councillors selected?
    • All interested members must submit an application by the deadline; late applications will not be considered.
    • Applications are reviewed by the Nominating Committee, which chooses the slate of nominees.
    • If nominated, you will be notified via email by mid-August and will need to accept the nomination via the link you receive – and by the deadline – in order to confirm your nomination. 
    • The slate of nominees will be published 30 days prior to the election, which takes place during the Governing Council meeting at the IREM Global Summit.
    • All IREM members in attendance at the Governing Council meeting elect the new Councillors from the slate of nominees – the term begins January 1 the following year.
