National Leased Housing Association survey finds increased insurance costs for affordable housing providers

The National Leased Housing Association (NLHA) conducted a survey to further investigate the underlying factors that contribute to increased insurance costs among commercial and residential properties. In addition to several interesting findings, the survey found that across all lines of insurance limited markets are the top reason for higher premiums and nearly one in every three policies had rate increases of 25% or more.

Update on the National Flood Insurance Program

The National Flood Insurance Program has been temporarily extended until November 17th. However, there is still a possibility of a lapse in the NFIP program, which could have a disastrous impact on the industry. The Congressional Research Service published an insightful white paper that explains the implications if the National Flood Insurance Program were to lapse, including the inability to issue new flood insurance contracts.

HUD releases final HOTMA rule

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has unveiled its final rule for implementing the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act (HOTMA). Visit HUD’s HOTMA resource page to learn more about the numerous changes, including income determination standards, resident self-certification, and interim reexamination.

Global Summit

Industry professionals gathered in Toronto for IREM’s 2023 Global Summit. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from incredible speakers, join informational learning sessions, and attend several site tours.

The Affordable Housing Advisory Council met to discuss important issues such as HOTMA and NSPIRE, while the Advocacy Committee passed updated policy statements, which will be available soon on irem.org.
