Capitol Hill Fly-In

Overview

Conducting a face-to-face meeting with your members of Congress, or their staff, is the most effective way to educate and influence legislators on issues important to the property management industry.

What is the Capitol Hill Fly-in? Find out from Dawn Carpenter, CPM®, IREM® Senior Vice President.

The Capitol Hill Fly-in offers IREM members an opportunity to meet with their federal legislators and advocate for issues of importance to the real estate management industry.

Meeting with lawmakers in Washington is critical for the future health and growth of the industry, and IREM is making it as easy as possible to make your voice heard. Participating in the Fly-in allows you to:

  • Build relationships with legislators that will only increase in value over time
  • Speak directly to the people with the power to change laws and regulations about issues that matter to you, your business, and the clients you represent
  • Gain valuable exposure and experience
  • Be part of something bigger than yourself

How to schedule meetings with legislators

Our recent webinar “Scheduling and Conducting Successful Meetings with Your Federal Legislators” provides detailed information on how to identify, schedule, and conduct effective meetings with federal legislators. Below is a quick summary of the webinar:

  1. Identify your legislators (two Senators and one Rep.)
    1. You can easily find your legislators using our Legislator Lookup Tool
    2. Use your home address
  2. Submit a meeting request
    1. Feel free to use this template letter
    2. Many offices will require you to fill out the meeting request form on their website
    3. If you’re asked to provide the topics when scheduling your meeting, feel free to share our 2020 Public Policy Priorities and explain you are meeting as part of a Fly-in and will follow-up with the specific issues soon.
    4. Ask for 30 minutes (but 15 is fine) and specify that you are asking to meet in their DC office
    5. Always follow up with a phone call
  3. Let us know about your meeting
    1. Once confirmed, please submit the details to IREM staff

Already scheduled your meetings? Let IREM know!

Once your meeting is confirmed, please submit the meeting details to IREM Headquarters. You can always edit the information if anything changes.
