This webinar will provide an overview of the Fair Housing protections with regards to sex and gender. A panel of experts will cover the difference between sex and gender and how they are protected (or not) through federal and state Fair Housing laws, as well as how these protections are put into practice, especially in terms of discrimination and hostile/coercive environments. Additionally, this webinar will explore recent trends in multifamily and campus housing for addressing needs based on gender identity.

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between sex and gender protection
  • Recognize how operations are impacted by sex and gender protections as provided by local, state, and federal Fair Housing laws
  • List some examples of discrimination and hostile and/or coercive environments protected under the law, as well as strategies to reduce exposure
  • Identify best practices for addressing and accommodating the needs of residents as it relates to gender identity and sex discrimination, in both conventional and by-the-bed leasing

Eric Luskin, CPM
Eric Luskin Eric Luskin is the Senior Vice President Emeritus at The Scion Group LLC. He has worked in the student housing field since 1975, including a combined 27 years managing housing on campus for colleges and universities.  Then, after becoming a principal of The Scion Group in 2002, he went on to work as an advisor in more than 150 campus markets throughout the U.S., as well as in Canada, Mexico and the U.K. 

Over his career he has been an author and frequent presenter at professional associations on a diverse range of topics, including customer service, new developments, strategic planning and the Fair Housing Act.  Eric entered “semi” retirement in 2018, but still assists Scion with select clients, continues to facilitate campus workshops on Fair Housing, and has provided training at nearly 100 Scion communities on compliance with the FHA.      

Mr. Luskin is the recipient of the Dick Daines Memorial Award and the S. Earl Thompson Award, both presented by the Association of College & University Housing Officers-International, and the Michigan Property Manager of the Year Award from IREM®.  In addition to the Certified Property Manager Emeritus® distinction through IREM, Mr. Luskin is graduate of Wilmington College (Ohio) and of Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. 

Margaret Hanson Margaret Hanson, Senior Paralegal
Margaret Hanson, Senior Paralegal for The Scion Group since 2013, has over 20 years of experience focused on real estate sectors and oversees Scion’s daily legal and operational needs including contract review, entity management, acquisitions and Fair Housing matters. Ms. Hanson has continued her Fair Housing education through a network of seminars through Edge 2Learn, IREM® and Vendome Group. She is a national instructor for the Scion team regarding Fair Housing best practices.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Illinois State University and Certificate of Distinction in Paralegal Studies from The American Institute of Paralegal Studies.  

Chelsea Metivier Chelsea Metivier, Director, Advisory Services
Chelsea B. Metivier, Director of Advisory Services, applies her prior experience in residence life, student affairs assessment and enrollment management to best serve Advisory Services clients.  Ms. Metivier’s client work is focused on demand and feasibility studies and program reviews.  In addition to directing client projects, Ms. Metivier provides support to clients regarding Fair Housing matters.
Ms. Metivier earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Political Science, Economics & Law from the University of Richmond and a Masters of Education in Higher Education Student Affairs from Loyola University Chicago.
