IREM® to host webinar on COVID-19 HVAC operating strategies and energy management

Barry Abramson, PE, LEED AP O+M to present during a live session on Tuesday, July 21 at 1 p.m. CST

CHICAGO (July 21, 2020) – There has been much question throughout the COVID-19 pandemic about the ability of the virus to spread through the air, and specifically, through heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Guidance from ASHRAE calls for changes to building operations, including how HVAC systems are operated, can reduce airborne exposures. However, these new operating strategies will increase energy usage in many buildings.

To help property and asset managers make their buildings safer, while also maintaining energy efficiency, IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management), is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, July 21 at 1 p.m. CST, on the topic of “Energy Management in the Age of COVID-19”. This event will explain and quantify the adverse energy impacts of these HVAC operational changes by covering:

  • COVID-19 related HVAC operating strategies and how they increase a building’s energy usage
  • Models that quantify those energy usage impacts
  • Five key approaches to identify no-cost/low cost measures and quick-payback retrofits to help make up for increased energy usage

The recommended HVAC operational strategies to reduce the spread of COVID-19 include:

  • Increased ventilation
  • Expanded operating hours
  • Enhanced air filtering

IREM Instructor Barry Abramson, PE, LEED AP O+M, Principal, Servidyne, will give the presentation on these energy management strategies. He has provided energy and sustainability consulting services for 40 years. He serves on ASHRAE Committee SPC211 that wrote the Standard for Commercial Building Energy Audits. He is the past Chair of the USGBC’s LEED Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group. He was Principal Investigator for an ASHRAE research project on HVAC equipment service life, with results published in the ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Applications.

Media interested in attending the webinar can contact Stephanie Majercik (smajercik@irem.org) for login credentials.
