    "Its not what you know, it’s who you know gets thrown around a lot, but the real truth is wisdom and experience is better than knowledge in this industry. That’s because wisdom learned from experience will provide you better insight and critical thinking skills than a book. Always lean on your wisest and most experienced peers and never be afraid to ask for help."

    "The most impactful insight was realizing how relationship-driven the property management industry is. Technical skills are important, but your ability to communicate, lead teams, and build trust with owners and tenants can make or break your success. IREM emphasized this through their leadership development content and mentorship opportunities."

  • What advice would you give to a student about to graduate who's looking for their first job in their property management career?

    Charlie

    "Work where you want to live, and gain as much experience and skills as you possibly can. Never waste a learning opportunity."

    "Don’t wait to be 100% 'qualified' on paper; apply anyway and show eagerness to learn. Focus on building your soft skills, and be open to entry-level roles that give you on-the-ground experience. Join organizations like IREM and start networking immediately. It can lead to mentors and job opportunities you wouldn’t find otherwise."

  • When did you decide to pursue your ACoM?

    Charlie

    "Upon passing the ACoM® exam in my Property Management Capstone Course. I had completed a residential internship my sophomore year and a commercial internship my junior year before I had to decide between the ARM and ACoM exams in place of a midterm exam."

    "I decided to pursue my ACoM® once I had gained some on-the-job experience and realized I wanted to specialize in managing commercial properties. IREM’s ACoM certification was the perfect next step to boost my credibility and expand my knowledge in that area."

  • How has your IREM journey helped you advance in your career?

    Charlie

    "My IREM journey allowed me to travel, meet new people to expand my network, learn new topics and deep dive into common Real Estate topics. I was able to apply for scholarships and recognition awards through my involvement which lead to more exposure in the industry. I would say my entire journey from joining IREM as a student in 2019 led me to my position as a Senior Assistant Property Manager at Cushman & Wakefield, managing over 1.6 million square feet in both downtown office and industrial in the Twin Cities Metro."

    "IREM has been a cornerstone of my professional development. From certification courses to local chapter events, everything has contributed to building both my skills and confidence. The ACoM credential, in particular, opened doors to more advanced roles and made me stand out during interviews."

    "I have been able to grow my network and skillset through the IREM events and education seminars and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future."
