IREM DISI Leaders: Navigating the increasingly diverse real estate management landscape

IREM is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the field of property management. To further this goal, IREM’s Diversity and Inclusion Succession Initiative (DISI) program recognizes and supports individuals from marginalized groups looking to pursue their CPM certification. The DISI program plays a crucial role in shaping the future of property management by serving as a pipeline to obtain certification, further careers and provide access to resources that build skills, broadens professional networks, and expands career opportunities.

Each year, IREM selects a group of 10 outstanding individuals as DISI Leaders, who serve as ambassadors for diversity and inclusion within their companies and their communities. They represent a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and are selected based on their eligibility, accomplishments, and commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in property management.

The DISI program is important to the future of property management for several reasons:

First, it addresses the issue of underrepresentation within the profession. By recognizing and supporting talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, the program helps to break down barriers and create equal opportunities for everyone. It sends a powerful message that talent and potential should be the primary criteria for success in property management, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or other characteristics.

Second, the program serves as a catalyst for change within the industry. DISI Leaders act as role models and advocates for diversity and inclusion, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. Their presence and achievements demonstrate that diversity enhances creativity, innovation, and overall business success. By promoting a more inclusive culture, DISI Leaders contribute to the creation of a more vibrant and dynamic property management profession.

Third, the DISI program encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing. These early-career professionals are provided with various opportunities for development, networking, and mentorship. This enables them to enhance their skills, broaden their perspectives, and build meaningful connections with industry leaders. The program facilitates the exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices, ultimately benefiting the entire property management community.

As society becomes more diverse and multicultural, it’s crucial for property management professionals to have a deep understanding of different cultures, perspectives, and market dynamics. By recognizing and empowering leaders from diverse backgrounds, the program ensures that the future of property management is well-equipped to meet these changing demands.

DISI Leaders are selected based on proven leadership skills, their desire to make a difference in property management, and their commitment to supporting the property management careers of others from marginalized groups. Here’s what a few of our standout DISI leaders have said about their journeys:

Destiny Robinson, Interurban Real Estate Group, Portland, Oregon: “Despite the history of systematic oppression in the workplace, property management allows all persons with ability to succeed. I feel more doors have been opened to me in this field than any other I have held. I would love to assist in opening the door for others.”

Isabel Cauich from CBRE in Pasadena, California: “I’m a first-generation Latina college graduate who began her career in the commercial real estate industry, and am grateful for all the challenges I’ve encountered because it has made me the person I am today.”

This year's DISI Leaders are all exceptional professionals who serve as role models and advocates for change. Their presence and achievements contribute to a more vibrant, innovative, and inclusive property management profession. The program's focus on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and professional development further strengthens the future of property management by equipping professionals with the necessary skills and perspectives to navigate an increasingly diverse and multicultural business landscape.
