Empowering the future: A conversation with Libby Ekre, CPM®, 2024 IREM® President

For a special episode of our “From the Front Lines” podcast, IREM Immediate Past President Renee Savage, CPM®, CCIM, interviewed 2024 IREM President Libby Ekre, CPM®. Below are some highlights from this insightful conversation. Read a summary of the dynamic exchange between these two influential leaders who are shaping the past, present, and future of IREM.

Discovering the power of purpose

Renee kicks off the interview by delving into Libby's journey and the theme she’s chosen for her tenure as president – the "Power of Purpose." Like many, Libby had an unconventional start in the real estate industry, starting as a leasing consultant and rising to become a property supervisor by the age of 25.  Like many others, Libby didn't initially have a clear sense of purpose, but discovered it along the way. She co-founded her own business at 34, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

The role of IREM in Libby's career

IREM played a pivotal role in Libby’s professional growth. The Certified Property Manager (CPM®) designation gave her new business a competitive edge. Joining the local chapter exposed her to a network of mentors in Phoenix who contributed to her knowledge and success. The CPM gave her confidence as a new business owner, showcasing a commitment to professionalism, ethical standards, and industry expertise.

Breaking barriers for women in property management

A significant milestone in IREM's history was the all-female officer team in 2023, during its 90th anniversary. As a woman in property management, Libby faced many challenges, but IREM, particularly through the CPM designation, instilled confidence in her. She celebrates the opportunities for women in the industry, emphasizing the endless possibilities and the importance of education in building a real estate management career.

Libby’s vision for IREM's future

In addition to advancing IREM’s strategic plan, Libby’s vision for her 2024 presidency places a strong emphasis on expanding membership and creating an inclusive environment. IREM should be a place where everyone feels valued, where every member discovers their purpose and contributes to a meaningful and supportive community.

Libby and Renee's conversation leaves us inspired by the transformative power of purpose and the positive impact of IREM on real estate management. Her vision for inclusivity and growth sets the stage for an exciting year ahead, reinforcing IREM's commitment to uplifting its members and making a lasting impact on our profession. As we look to the future, we see the continued evolution of IREM under the capable leadership of Libby Ekre.
