Building the future with Cameron Cary

Cameron Cary, a junior at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, is not your average college student. As an IREM® (Institute of Real Estate Management) Student Leader in 2022, and a driven real estate intern, Cameron shares his unique journey and insights into the world of real estate. Here he shares his experiences, aspirations, and the impact of being part of the IREM community.

Cameron's interest in real estate management blossomed during an internship with Borger Residential, a Washington, D.C.-based property management company, where he worked closely with Darryl Stevenson, an active member in the IREM community. Darryl's enthusiastic endorsement of the IREM community resonated with Cameron, highlighting the valuable connections and support system the community provides. Inspired, Cameron was accepted as an IREM Student Leader, a program that develops outstanding college and university students who wish to pursue a career in real estate management. Students selected for the program receive training and are matched with mentors to guide them through the experience and help launch their real estate management journeys.

Balancing act: Finance and psychology

Currently pursuing a double major in finance and psychology, Cameron is navigating his way through academic challenges. Reflecting on his academic journey, he emphasizes the importance of starting early in preparing for post-graduation life. “The sooner you can start thinking about what you're going to do after you graduate, the more prepared you’ll be when it actually happens,” he says. Cameron's proactive approach is evident in his position as a Resident Advisor, which presents an opportunity to manage a property, and to engage with other juniors and seniors on their own paths to graduation.

Navigating the real world: From DC to Houston

Cameron's internships have taken him from Washington, D.C. to New York City and now to Houston. Each experience has been a stepping stone, offering unique insights into different career paths in real estate. His upcoming internship in Houston with Hines, a real estate investment, development, and management firm, reflects his strong interest in the expanding field of data centers, a sector poised for substantial growth with major tech companies making significant investments. It also gives Cameron a chance to spend time with his Student Leaders mentor, IREM Houston member Nicole Foster, CPM®, who’s currently Chair of the IREM Member Experience Advisory Council.

Collaboration: priceless

What defines the real estate industry for Cameron is the collaborative mindset that dominates the community. In contrast to other industries, he appreciates the openness and camaraderie he’s experienced, especially with IREM members. Their willingness to share knowledge and support each other sets the stage for a community that thrives on helping each other grow and succeed.

“For me, the reason I chose real estate is because of the principle of collaboration and expanding your network,” he says. “I feel like a lot of times when you have somebody who’s willing to give their time and energy to see you grow, and see you learn more, that's an environment you're going to return to and give your all to as well.”

Nicole Foster plays a pivotal role in his journey. Even with a time zone difference, Nicole provides valuable guidance on various aspects, from real estate intricacies to navigating workplace challenges. IREM’s Student Leaders program confirms the commitment to fostering growth and development among its members.

From intern to entrepreneur

Looking toward the future, Cameron envisions a path that combines real estate management and asset management experiences. One of his many goals is to establish his own property management company to create a positive impact and provide quality affordable housing.

“A big dream of mine has always been to go back to Washington, D.C. and start my own property management company where I can give people who live in subsidized housing a place to call home,” says Cameron. “From what I've seen, even in my hometown, there are a lot of subsidized housing projects with people who genuinely don't like where they live. And I do understand the value you gain from actually enjoying the community you live in, in an environment where you're happy.”

The adventure is underway

Cameron Cary's journey reflects the dynamic opportunities and synergetic spirit of the real estate industry, particularly as experienced through the IREM community. “There’s a level of pivotability and flexibility that come from pursuing a career in real estate,” says Cameron. “There’s no limit to how much you can grow.”

His story serves as inspiration for aspiring real estate professionals, emphasizing the importance of learning, partnership, and a proactive mindset in building a successful career in real estate. As Cameron continues to shape his future, the doors remain wide open, offering myriad possibilities for anyone who explores this ever-evolving industry.
